This day did Her Majesty the Queen Herself send orders that I must stand down at end of week from Her Service and a Baronial Edict from my Lord doth sore constrain my travels and I do fair suspect there shall be a picket about my quarters this Friday coming for I am vexed grievously and weary of this damnable idleness and most keen to have at the enemy with good shot and drawn sword for they say that war will soon be upon these lands.

Fie, and a pox on all puddle fearing riders of the cycle!  Bloody craven buggers!

I now have a mild mental obsession with the pictures of the people with their hands over their ears.

First of all, I HAVE TO KNOW WHY!

Second, I want to have a wallpaper border made, or better yet, a full room circumference fresco of it in my den with the stereo.  Just because.

Third, I could see making some black robes with way cool green diagonal stripes, so I can run around Pennsic holding my ears**.

See what you have gone and done now, dear Family?  You have actually given me some enthusiasm about sewing.  (I have my copy of Patterns of Fashion at the ready, for I have trim application questions now.)  Next thing you know, I'll have a nice finished period correct garment to wear, and it will be all your fault.  You are a very infectious lot, and I thank the stahz every night to be one of you.

**or not, depending on what I find as the reason for this early submission to the Ministry of Funny Walks.

INTP - the Architect

You scored 0% I to E, 32% N to S, 90% F to T, and 68% J to P!

Architects are rare - maybe one percent of the population - and show the greatest precision in thought and speech of all the types. They tend to see distinctions and inconsistencies instantaneously, and can detect contradictions no matter when or where they were made. It is difficult for an Architect to listen to nonsense, even in a casual conversation, without pointing out the speaker's error. And in any serious discussion or debate Architects are devastating, their skill in framing arguments giving them an enormous advantage. Architects regard all discussions as a search for understanding, and believe their function is to eliminate inconsistencies, which can make communication with them an uncomfortable experience for many.

Ruthless pragmatists about ideas, and insatiably curious, Architects are driven to find the most efficient means to their ends, and they will learn in any manner and degree they can. They will listen to amateurs if their ideas are useful, and will ignore the experts if theirs are not. Authority derived from office, credential, or celebrity does not impress them. Architects are interested only in what make sense, and thus only statements that are consistent and coherent carry any weight with them.

Architects often seem difficult to know. They are inclined to be shy except with close friends, and their reserve is difficult to penetrate. Able to concentrate better than any other type, they prefer to work quietly at their computers or drafting tables, and often alone. Architects also become obsessed with analysis, and this can seem to shut others out. Once caught up in a thought process, Architects close off and persevere until they comprehend the issue in all its complexity. Architects prize intelligence, and with their grand desire to grasp the structure of the universe, they can seem arrogant and may show impatience with others who have less ability, or who are less driven.

Your Word is "Why"

You see life as complicated and intriguing. The only thing you know for sure is that you haven't figured it all out yet.

You question everything and believe very little. And whatever you believe is likely to change.

You are interested in theories, philosophies, and religions... even if you don't buy into any of them.

You are also fascinated by how things work. You'd like to understand as much in the world as possible.

It has come to my attention that there are not many in the East Kingdom who are aware of the The Iron Ring of the East, a fencing challenge that has been fought on the rapier battlefields since around A.S. XXXVII. I was indeed amazed to find out that I knew something about the East Kingdom that even Liam did not know, but then, I have spent more time (ok, about 90 % of my time) hanging out on the rapier fields than he.

As a bit of background on the Iron Ring of the East, I found this letter on a Northshield list, written by the gentle who initiated the Challenge.

"The story behind why I started the Challenge of the Iron Ring is...
A couple of years ago (long before I became the Baron of Nordskogen), I
was having a conversation with Master Warder Alexander de Seton at an
event in the Midlands regarding there not being enough emphasis on just
prowess in rapier. It was always expected to be there, but many
tournaments, awards, and overall character assessments incorporated the
entire aspects of a courtier (honor, courtly graces, chivalry, teaching,
etc). All this being very good, but I felt that recognizing and
rewarding ability was almost to the point of getting ignored. Master
Alexander suggested that if saw this as a gap in the rapier community
that I should think of a way to help solve it (in other words put my
money where my mouth was :). That day he was giving out hematite rings
to those people who he had had good fights with as a token, he gave one
to me as said maybe this will spark some ideas. Well it did, on the
way back from the event I figured out the entire rules for the Challenge
of the Iron Ring. That very night I posted the Challenge of the Iron
Ring on the rapier lists and by morning Warder Uadahlrich emailed me.
He had also received a hematite ring from Master Alexander and being
from completely on the other side of the Middle Kingdom, he thought 1
Iron Ring for all of the Midrealm including Northshield would not be
enough to provide the opportunity for many to Challenge for it. He
asked my permission to start the Southern Iron Ring. So the very first
Iron Rings were the two hematite rings given out by Master Alexander de
Seton. (Unfortunately hematite is brittle and did not fair so well when
struck by a rapier, so now the rings truly are Iron Rings.) And as it
sits now there is a Northshield Iron Ring (former Northern Ring), a
Midrealm Iron Ring (former Southern Ring, as it will remain within the
new Midrealm borders drawn in October), an East Kingdom Iron Ring, a
Meridies Iron Ring, and there may be Iron Rings of Ealdormere and the
Principality of Gleann Abhann already or very soon.

So now, I say to any of you, if you feel that prowess or ability is not
properly emphasized in any of the martial or non-martial communities
that you are a part of, you should think of a way to solve it. :)

Yours in Service,

Rodrigo, sometimes goof."

I don't believe in making resolutions for the New Year, but a horoscope forecast may have given me a motto I can live with.

With Pluto now in your 3rd House of Thinking, your mind is more powerful, which can be a blessing or a curse. Dark, cynical and obsessive thoughts can take over if you're not vigilant about disciplining your mind and clearing out negative patterns.

"Don't believe everything you think" is a good rule to live by this year.

We return to the Cambridge War Memorial, 1640 Cambridge St., in Cambridge,  this Sunday at 2:00 PM for the first time since their major renovation.  Please be mindful of the new gym floors and do not wear any type of marking shoes if you can help it, at least until we see what the conditions are like.

When there is no threat of snow, there is free parking at 10 Roberts St.in the lot behind the Harvard Vanguard building.  Because of the snow that is predicted for Saturday into Sunday, I am posting the weather closing and parking information for this year.  I will post any information I get as soon as I hear anything, and as always, you are welcome to contact me with questions.  Please let me know ahead of time if you have a need of any loaner gear.

I hope many of you are as curious to see the new gym as I am and will come out for practice on Sunday.  Birka is only a few weeks away...

Have I told you today that I belong to The Best Household Ever?!?!?

[info]safiya_shirazi and [info]hugh_mannity  have agreed to be ready to leave Casa del Yogi at the ungodly hour of 5:30 AM on Saturday so that I fulfill my guard duty obligations in time to allow for fencing at 12th Night.

Of course it may just be that they are tired of listening to me jonesing my way through The Dark Times and want to get me a fix ASAP.

Or it might be the bribery:  Rum is always preferable to Whine.

I love my Family.

New Year's Eve is a time for celebration with friends and loved ones, or for quiet reflection alone.  I chose not to partake of one, nor languish in the other, the stroke of midnight coming and going unnoticed in the realm of dreamless sleep.

This past year was the best year of my life, and conversely the second worse; so fall the consequences of a double life.   Such extremes demand a sharpening of focus, and cause a reordering of priorities.  Above all else, I cherish the friends in my life, and thank them wholeheartedly for their love and support.  I can but hope to repay their high regard in kind.

I am eager to see how the rest of this tale unfolds.
